Online Resources for Learning

Campus offers many academic resources but it may be helpful to review concepts and have more individualized resources at your fingertips.

Whether you need to review concepts or have a specific question, these are reliable online resources to consider. Please note, the best strategy for learning is a combination of study groups, office hours, tutoring, and then self-learning through these various platforms.

Below are recommended by engineering undergraduate students.

Use of Generative AI Tools

Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini are permitted in some classes, but NOT all. It is important to review your course syllabus carefully or speak directly with your instructor if you are unsure about what is allowed.

There are many AI programs available to support student learning. However, these tools are not a substitute for critical thinking, analysis, creativity, originality, or problem-solving. Engineering is a craft that develops over time through practice, skill-building, and the development of intuition. As with any resource, it is important to follow best practices when using AI or other online tools.

CARE Recommended Best Practices

  • Try it yourself first: Make an honest attempt at the problem. Productive struggle is part of the learning process.
  • Lecture notes: Review course lecture notes to see if the information you need has already been covered.
  • Textbook: Use your textbook (physical or digital) as a primary resource. The table of contents can help you quickly locate relevant material.
  • Your own notes: Taking and revisiting your own notes is a powerful way to reinforce learning. If you want to strengthen your note-taking skills, CARE Tutors and Peer Advisors can help.
  • Search engines: Tools like Google can help you find explanations, concepts, and similar problems, including helpful videos.
  • AI tools: Use AI as a last resort. When used responsibly, AI can support brainstorming and studying, but it should not be used to complete your work for you. Treat it as a collaborative partner not a replacement for your own thinking.

"Your courses aren't always going to give you all the tools you need to succeed, and sometimes you need some more help or a different approach. Online resources are fantastic ways to do that! I've used Paul's notes and the UIUC Engineering server a lot, and I think they've both made me more confident with the material I've learned.
